Birding throughout Belize is for all levels. Typically, over 100 species can be spotted in a few days and birding can be combined with other activities such as canoeing, hiking on jungle trails, or simply sitting on your deck at the lodge. Both casual and serious birders will appreciate birding with our excellent guides and having the opportunity to add several endangered or rare species to their life lists.

Day 1
Arrive Belize City International for the afternoon land transfer to New River about a 1-hour ride. Then transfer to a river boat for the 1-hour trip to the lodge.

Day 2
Jungle Birding Expeditions
The dawn jungle chorus will take birders to new heights of euphoria!! Trogons, Woodcreepers, Motmots, Tanagers, Toucans, Parrots, and Woodpeckers are but a few of what you can expect on these early morning expeditions. Forest walks in the afternoons may give birders glimpses of Tinamous, Collared Aracaris and Raptors coming into the forest to roost.

Day 3
Sunrise Canoe Birding
Early starts are what birding is all about and 5am will see you canoeing across the lagoon towards Dawson’s Creek in search of Boat billed, Green, Bare-throated Tiger and the Black-crowned Night Herons. These exquisite herons along with Vireos, Warblers and Flycatchers are normally seen. Owl Tracking: After a relaxing dinner this is an exciting way to spend your evening, audibly tracking nocturnal birds through ancient Maya territory! Look out for the Vermiculated Screech, Ferruginous Pygmy, Mottled and Stygian owl. Nightjars, Common Pauraque and some of the smaller nocturnal mammals.

Day 4
Dawn Birding - Lunch - Afternoon Air & Ground Transfer to The Lodge at Chaa Creek.

Daybreak will find you scanning the reed beds of the New River in one of our riverboats as you search for some of the shy water fowl species that inhabit the area. The mass of reeds and water lilies are host to the secretive Yellow-breasted Crake, Ruddy Crake, Spotted Rail and Northern Jacana. Return to the lodge for lunch and early afternoon flight to Belize City where we transfer to vehicle for the 2 ride to the lodge.

Day 5
Birding in Mountain Pine Ridge & Visit Carcol Spend a full day exploring the unique habitat of the Mountain Pine Ridge area. Pine forests and gallery jungle make for a totally different mix of birding species compared to the costal jungles, lagoons and savannas of the flat Yucatán peninsula. Highlights may include Orange Breasted Falcon, King Vulture, Stygian Owl, Laughing Falcon, Grace's Warbler, Lovely Cotinga, Tody Motmot and many, many more.

Day 6
Birding on Vaca Plateau
In the early morning we head for Vaca Falls a microhabitat of waterfalls, rainforest and pine habitat. Lunch. After lunch we have a short hike to Chumpiate Maya Cave for cave ecology tour. The cliffs around the entrance of the cave make for some great afternoon birding. Swifts, Raptors, darting hummingbirds, Green Jay, Golden Hooded Tanager, Hepatic Tanager, Montezuma’s Oropendula, Keel-Billed Toucan and Crested Guan are just a few of the flamboyant species you may encounter in the area.

Day 7
Hummingbird Highway & Southern Belize
In the morning depart the Lodge at Chaa Creek for the journey south. Travel the Hummingbird Highway over the Maya Mountains divide with a stop at Blue Hole National Park. Then turn south on the Southern Highway with a stop at Cockcomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary for an afternoon birding walk. Then on to the lodge.

Day 8
Ancient Maya Ruins & The Birds
One of the most awe inspiring birding locations is within the Maya archaeological sites of Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun; imagine being among the ancient ruins of the Maya, bird species abound in the early morning and as the sun goes down. Fruiting tree attract Toucans and Aracari, hummingbirds and orioles abound. Pass through traditional Maya villages on the way to these locations.

Day 8
Morning Hike-Wildlife Exhibit-Golden Stream
Early morning hike past freshwater lagoons teaming with Avocets, Oystercatchers, Jacana, Gallinule, Coot and Whistling Ducks. Hike Cutting Grass and Boden Creek Trails, an area of pristine lowland tropical broadleaf forest. Hummingbirds, trogons, woodpeckers and bill birds are plentiful. End the morning hike at the Ballum Na Lodge (House of the Jaguar) and visit BLE’s Jaguar Exhibit, a 2.1-acre enclosure located within the surrounding jungle. Have lunch back at the lodge. In the afternoon departure the lodge to Fig Tree Landing where you and your Maya Guide begin the 3-hour canoe or kayak expedition deep into the southern Belizean jungle and down the pristine Golden Stream. Hummingbird, trogons, raptors are just a few of the many bird species you will encounter on the way.

Day 9
Electric Boat Safari - Canopy Platform
Take a dawn electric pontoon boat safari on the river, where many species are up early feeding and moving about. Keel-Billed and Blue Crowned Motmot, Rufous-tailed and Long-billed Hermit Hummingbirds, Yellow-headed Parrots, woodpeckers and creepers, Red-capped and White-collard Manakin are just a few of the species you are likely to encounter. Return to the lodge for late morning breakfast. Take the middle of the day and relax. Late afternoon nature-walk on Ceiba Loop Trail and a visit to our Tree Canopy Platform suspended in a giant Ceiba tree 100’ above the forest floor. Watch the sun set and parrots come to roost for the night. After dinner take a short night walk and then set out by electric boat on the river watching with spot light for the many mammals and bird species of the jungle.

Nature Walk - Electric Boat Safari
Early morning nature walk along Poncho Landing Trail then electric pontoon boat safari on the river. Rest and relax in the middle of the day, then its back out by electric pontoon boat down river for more great birding,

Day 11
Jungle Camp Lodge To The Caribbean
Depart in the early morning by electric boat for the trip down river and towards the coast passing through several distinctive ecosystems along the way. Watch for Howler Monkeys and parrots as the sun rises over the jungle river. As we get towards the coast explore small side creeks and mangrove habitat, nesting areas of White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills and many wading bird species. Transfer to our marine boat for the 30-minute trip to Moho Cay Lodge. Late lunch. Have the afternoon free to relax on our beautiful white sand beach enjoying the fresh sea breezes and sunshine.

Day 12
Port Honduras Marine Reserve
Take full day excursion within the Port Honduras Marine Reserve, heading first to the Snake Cay Group, for a morning of swimming, snorkeling and island habitat birding. Pelicans, Boobies, Frigate birds, Plovers, Sandpipers, Gulls and Turns are abundant in a variety of species. This group of islands also serves as a resting stop for many migrants coming across the open ocean from South and Central America on the way north. Head back to Moho Cay Lodge for lunch. In the afternoon explore the many cays and mangrove coastline where the elusive manatee can sometimes be spotted, great birding, watch for Morlet’s crocodile, sea turtles and sea rays.

Flight Home
Depart via our marine boat for the 30-minute ride to Punta Gorda Town and the Tropic Air flight to Belize City International Airport and your trip home.
